Phraseological Constructions Što V‘, V‘ in Bosnian and Croatian and Corresponding German Expressions

Abstract


This paper examines the phraseme construction što V’, V’ in Bosnian and Croatian, as well as its corresponding translation equivalents in German. The introductory section defines phraseme constructions, which have been somewhat neglected in traditional phraseology but have received increasing attention in contemporary linguistic research. The construction što V’, V’ occurs frequently in both Bosnian and Croatian; however, it has not been sufficiently described in previous studies.The paper provides a detailed analysis of this construction, outlining its formal properties and semantic functions in the two source languages. Based on the findings of this analysis, a contrastive analysis with German is subsequently conducted. The results indicate that certain meanings can be translated into German with full equivalence, whereas meanings that exhibit a higher degree of idiomatization require different translation strategies, as full equivalence is not always attainable in such cases. As part of the contrastive analysis, several proposals are offered for rendering these meanings in German.The findings presented in this study provide a solid basis for further research on phraseme constructions as independent linguistic units, as well as for contrastive studies that may be conducted on other types of phraseme constructions. The analysis is based on examples collected from the Sketch Engine corpus for Croatian and examples attested in the Clarin.si corpus for Bosnian.
