Abstract

In Turkish, terms used to express kinship relations are often employed as identity markers through which group affiliation is expressed in order to enable easier and more pleasant communication. Scholarly studies dealing with the pragmatics of the Turkish language analyze the pragmatic values of identity markers through which closeness and intimacy with the interlocutor are established. In this way, they provide a good foundation and a good starting point for a detailed analysis of the pragmatic functions of identity markers formed through the use of terms for expressing kinship relations. This paper analyzes conversational situations from the novel Kafamda Bir Tuhaflık within which the terms kardeş (brother, sister), ağbi (older brother), and abla (older sister) are used as identity markers. The analysis applies the analytical, descriptive and contrastive methods. Such an analysis shows that the terms kardeş, ağbi, and abla, as well as their translation equivalents in Bosnian, function as identity markers in the realization of different speech acts in different conversational situations. The paper contributes to the study of Turkish pragmatics and to the contrastive analysis of two genetically and typologically different languages.
