Abstract

The paper considers the pedagogical value of geoheritage and geotourism potential of the municipality of Rožaje in the context of education for sustainable development and environmental protection. Special emphasis is placed on the possibilities of using geological resources in formal and informal education, as well as on the development of environmental awareness and responsibility. Rožaje is a municipality located in the northeastern part of Montenegro and covers an area of 432 km2. According to the latest census data from 2023, this municipality has a population of 23,184 (MONSTAT 2023). Rožaje is home to a large number of geolocalities that have potential for tourism development and thus stimulate the economically sustainable development of this municipality. The aim of the paper is to identify and valorize geoheritage objects, their geoconservation and assess the possibilities of sustainable geotourism development by applying the M-GAM model (Modified Geosite Assessment Model), which will determine whether this area has potential for economic development from the aspect of sustainable geotourism in the future. The research includes four representative geolocalities: Musina Jama, the limestone clique of Ganića karst, the Vrelo Ibra spring and the Ibra canyon with meanders. Using the M-GAM model, it will be assessed which geolocalities are suitable for the development of geotourism, as well as propose measures for the preservation of geolocalities, their geoconservation, i.e. how to manage and sustainably plan the development of tourism. The methodological approach includes the analysis of relevant literature, field observations, as well as the interpretation of available data on the natural and cultural resources of Rožaje. The results show that the geoheritage of Rožaje has significant scientific, pedagogical and tourist values, whereby the integration of geotourism into educational programs can contribute to sustainable economic development and the preservation of the natural identity of the region.
