Risky Behavior in Adolescence: Neurobiological Mechanisms and Developmental Context

Gorica Vuksanović

Abstract

Adolescence represents a developmentally sensitive period marked by profound neurobiological, cognitive, and social changes, which collectively contribute to an increased propensity for risky behaviors. This paper explores the underlying mechanisms of such behaviors, with particular focus on the maturation of brain structures — most notably the limbic system and the prefrontal cortex — whose asynchronous development fosters impulsivity, reward-seeking, and reduced self-regulation. Contemporary findings on grey and white matter development, the functions of the prefrontal cortex, risk perception, and the role of peer influence in decision-making are presented. The discussion further addresses the impact of environmental factors and individual differences that modulate neurobiological vulnerability, emphasizing the importance of the interaction between biological predispositions and social experiences. In conclusion, the paper highlights the need for an integrative approach to understanding adolescent risk-taking, wherein neurobiological, psychological, and sociocultural factors are regarded as interdependent components of development, with the goal of improving prevention and intervention strategies targeting youth.
