A View of Phraseme Constructions in Literary Translations: Between Creativity and Necessity

Abstract


Within the framework of Construction Grammar, phraseme constructions are viewed as structures consisting of fixed and variable components, characterized by a high degree of expressiveness and frequent use in everyday language. This paper aims to examine how such constructions are translated from the source language, German, into the target languages, and it focuses on the issue of their equivalents in Bosnian and Croatian literary translations. Since literary translation itself requires excellent linguistic and translational competence and often reflects the translator’s own poetic and literary sensibilities, translators frequently find themselves balancing between the principles of creativity and the necessity of structural reproduction when translating phraseme constructions. The analytical part of the paper presents examples of translations in relation to their structural and semantic adaptation to the source phraseme constructions and discusses possible deviations. The corpus analyzed originates from the COST Action PhraConRep – A Multilingual Repository of Phrasem Constructions in Central and Eastern European Languages (CA22115), supported by COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology), which explores phraseme constructions from a contrastive perspective. Within the project, German serves as the source language, while the corresponding constructions or translation proposals are presented and analyzed in the target languages. The established high percentage of translations with structural-semantic equivalence can be explained by the tendency for translators to try to remain faithful to both the structure and the meaning of the given structure and to look for equivalent phrasal constructions in the target languages.
